COVID-19 Guidelines

Thank you for including Gulf Island Kayaking in your plans!

We are excited to get people out on the water and connect to nature. Even though kayaking naturally facilitates a lot of physical distancing on the water, the docks, ramps and office where we operate and launch are confined areas, and we want to make sure we are following industry practices and guidelines from BC Health Authority in assuring we minimize exposure and contact. Our COVID-19 plan to keep us all safe and healthy and happy will be updated as per provincial health guidelines. As of July 1, 2020:

Booking your tour or rental:

We are open for the 2020 season providing rentals of canoes, kayaks, stand up paddleboards and bicycles as well as kayak tours. All rentals and tours must be reserved ahead of time to ensure that there is space in the office and on the dock.

To book, you can call the office 250 539 8344 or cell 250 539 8344 or email info@seakayak.ca

Payment is accepted by etransfer, telephone credit card payment, tap and credit card machine (sanitizer is available) and cash.

In the office:

We are limiting visitors to the office to one at a time and one per group. A safe station is designated for visitors and sanitizer is available. Regularly touched surfaces are cleaned with soapy water and disinfected.

On the dock:

We recommend that guests bring their own masks that fit their face and they feel comfortable using. We offer disposable masks for purchase ($2) for those who do not have them.

The railing to the dock is regularly washed with soapy water.

On the dock lessons are encouraged for kayakers to ensure that your group is safe and has the best possible time.

All rentals of sea kayaks will be “hands off” meaning that we show you your vessels, explain any technical aspects of the kayaks (seat and foot pedal adjustments), and let you take care of the rest.

Equipment Care:

Your vessel/bike and equipment are thoroughly cleaned prior to each rental using industry recommended practices.

We will do everything we can to make you feel safe and comfortable.

Tours:

Prior to getting on the water, we will have a comprehensive orientation about safety on the water, including proper paddle use and what will happen in the event an incident occurs.

This includes: Proper PFD fitting, basic padding stroke technique, how to adjust your foot pedals in a kayak, how to employ and deploy your spray skirt, proper entry and exit from your kayak, and how to preform a self rescue should you fall out of your kayak during your chosen tour.

For your safety and enjoyment, we will be primarily guiding you close to the shoreline where the true beauty of nature’s land/water interface is experienced.

Rentals:

Transport Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard team having limited staff and are requiring distance measures of no less than 6' for most emergency situations, so let’s do everything we can to keep you safe!

You must have experience with your chosen activity (kayaking or canoeing) for the waters you would like to paddle. You may rent a SUP for up to four hours without any prior experience, provided you are in a group of two or more.

If you have limited paddling experience there is plenty of shoreline in protected waters for you to enjoy – we can come up with a route plan together, and a map will be provided to your group.

Long term rentals will need to have a route plan, including any overnight destinations, approved by a lead guide.

We acknowledge the traditional and unceded territories of the Penelakut and other Coast Salish peoples where our office and paddling playground lies. We are thankful to be able to live and paddle in this special place. Please enjoy these lands and waters with your utmost respect.
